Rules & Regulations Of Scrapping Your Car

If it’s time for you to scrap your car but you’re unsure of where to start, you might want to read this handy guide on Scrap Cars. Scrapping your vehicle is not a complex process, but you need to make sure that you have the right documentation and follow the correct steps to avoid breaking any laws.

A Guide To Scrapping Your Car

This guide explores each step of scrapping your car and will hopefully answer any questions you have about the process. You can stay up to date with car scrapping requirements and new information by heading over to our news page after you finish reading this article, too.

Firstly, you need to find an ATF (Authorised Treatment Facility) to dispose of your vehicle. It’s illegal to dispose of a vehicle in any other way, so this is important. Once you’ve found an ATF, you can gather your documentation and get ready to scrap your car.

When Does A Car Need To Be Scrapped?

If your car is costing you a considerable amount of money in repairs and upkeep and is worth more as a non-runner, it might be time for you to scrap your car and save yourself some money. The longer you own a vehicle the more costly repairs are needed, and these costs often add up to a lot more than what your car’s worth.

What Documents Are Required To Scrap A Car?

You’ll need to provide the following documents when scrapping your car:

    • Photo ID
    • Proof of address
    • V5 logbook (not essential, but recommended)

Is My Car Scrappable Without Keys?

Yes, you can Scrap Cars without having the keys. However, you’ll need to have paperwork that shows your proof of ownership, such as your V5 registration document or a bill of sale.

    Estimating A Car’s Scrap Value

The value of a scrap car is usually determined by its weight. However, make and model are also taken into consideration when scrapping a car, as newer and more expensive models will often return higher prices.

The condition of your car will affect its scrap value too. If your car is missing parts, the ATF will deduct money from your overall scrap payment.

    Declaring A Scrapped Car

Declaring a scrapped car is easy. Just fill in the yellow section that’s in your V5 logbook and send it to the DVLA. You’ll normally receive a Certificate of Destruction from them within seven days.

If you don’t have your V5 logbook, you can write to the DVLA instead and include information about:

    • Your car’s make, model and registration
    • The name and address of the ATF that scrapped your vehicle
    • The date your car was scrapped
